LFG Introduction: dVIN ($VIN) - tokenizing the $1T wine asset class

Thanks @Kash - can’t wait for Singapore!

Super interesting project. My question is is there a way to quantify the value DePIN adds to the wine industry as a whole?

This is amazing. How is convincing non crypto natives that this is a good idea going? What what have you learned?

Thanks @Defibeats for the note. It’s been a journey, but we have learned a lot. The main thing for us has been to abstract out as much of the crypto and blockchain elements as possible. We don’t call them NFTs - we call them Digital Corks and Tasting Tokens. We lean heavily on the air miles analogy - consumers are earning status, rewards and points - not crypto.

I think back to the early days of the Internet, when all the digital natives used terms like TCP/IP and HTTP and MP3 that just alienated anyone who was not technical. You never hear those terms any more, but you use the tech every day. We are skating to where the puck is going to be - onboarding the next billions users that probably won’t ever know or care that they are using blockchain or crypto.

Thanks @brpunkrmax good question (and welcome!).

Luxury wine needs to be stored and transported with the right temperature and humidity conditions or it spoils. In the industry, it is a good rule of thumb that 1 in 10 bottles is bad, and ends up getting poured down the drain. In a $100B/year industry, that’s a $10B/year problem - and the people that pay for that are usually small independent restaurants and wine shops - and consumers.

Because the supply chain for wine is atomized (millions of small, independent players), a DePIN could help solve that problem. Imagine each bottle of wine with an RFID tag, and each warehouse, truck and shipping container with an independently owned and operated RFID interrogator that records location, temperature and humidity. The smart contract on the bottle pays each interrogator with a $VIN micropayment to update the blockchain, and when the bottle reaches its destination, the purchasing manager can check and see of it was stored and transported correctly. This will incentivize better storage and shipping throughout the industry.

It won’t solve the problem overnight, and there are a lot of hurdles to overcome, but in time it’s not hard to imagine that a DePIN could take a big bite out of the $10B/year problem, and improve the industry for everyone.

@MintedAuAg A few folks have brought this up to me - especially around the idea of proving provenance and purity. I know a few people in the industry - there is some crossover between the two industries. Good food for thought and future conversations.

Wow, thanks so much for your feedback. We certainly are excited about the problems the protocol solves and the enormous potential of the $VIN economy. :chains::wine_glass: :arrows_counterclockwise: :rocket:

Right?! Big fan of air miles and this is that for drinking great wines. Twist my arm.

Uncork to earn! :champagne: It’s like air miles for fine wine.

$VIN is initially used as loyalty points to connect winemakers with consumers, eventually providing a path for direct sales.

The analogy doesn’t stop there:

  • Digital Corks are the equivalent of airline tickets - purchased and burned after use.

  • Tasting Tokens are boarding passes - proof that the flight was taken, and earning status: lounge access, automatic upgrades, etc.

  • $VIN are like miles - awarded after the flight is taken and redeemable for flights, upgrades, and other services.

  • Airline seats, like bottles of wine, are a finite/limited resource. Transparency and liquidity in the marketplace should create a better, more rational pricing mechanism.

  • Winery experiences (tastings, dinners, etc), like airport lounges, are exclusive and allocated for just the best customers.

  • Status with the brand (for both airlines and winemakers) is a flex for high-end consumers.

  • Global wine industry = $450B, global airline industry = $540B.

Love the partnership with Solana! It really signals strong support and credibility for dVIN.
It would be epic if dVIN could bring everyone together for a good glass of Rose at Solana BreakPoint

Interesting! The strategy of embedding $VIN into wine bottles for long-term value is exceptionally forward-thinking.

I can see this setting a new benchmark in the luxury market.

Super bullish on the idea (and the execution so far) :muscle:
I’m wondering how the ecosystem will accommodate smaller winemakers?
Their participation could significantly enhance the diversity of dVIN’s offerings

Watching how partnerships evolve as the project grows will be interesting. These relationships will be key to the project’s success :purple_heart:

Very bullish on dVIN. $VIN seems like it will bring significant value across the RWA, DeFi and DePIN verticles. Solving for the lack of consumer data in the luxury wine industry is massive, as currently, it’s a black box. Data is gold frens. Also, increasing cost efficiency with DeFi is great, would be very happy to reduce the cost of luxury wine by removing TraFi bank fees from the equation. I think there are challenges with DePIN but I’m hopeful for solutions. Excited for the launch!

The thing I really like and can see great use for is how the dVIN protocol can be applied to other RWA industries. In combination with the IoT tracking (the smartwater / smartdust / RFID / NFC in sync with the SC) you get this interoperable system that not only adds valuable data, but more trust and liquidity. It’s a positive feedback system.

I checked out your YouTube and saw the webinar you hosted with Deloitte. Deloitte see how the dVIN protocol improves EGS reporting and improves compliance - with actual measurements/data!

I can also see the arts world and insurance companies using the dVIN protocol… once you get to the stage of white-labelling the ecosystem.
It can be used for the lending of high value art pieces, and can be used for the repatriation of cultural heritage objects.

So many looted antiquities end up in auction houses. Slap the dVIN protocol on there and send the art / objects back to where they belong - and track the global movement! :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed: :earth_africa:

Wine is just the beginning! Cheers to dVIN, good luck all!

@9amnft Thanks! We have a bunch of champagne on the way to Singapore now! Champagne + $VIN airdrop… It’s going to be an epic Breakpoint!

Thanks @JonnyE - I usually tell everyone that we are the most boring project on blockchain, completely focused on data, business intelligence, and supply-chain efficiencies. Data IS gold!

@Dr_AG you are 100% right. If you walk into a wine shop, you might see one bottle made by a multi-national company, and the one right next to it was made by one guy with a donkey somewhere in the middle of France or Italy. We need to make sure there are solutions for both of these and everyone in between. That’s why we have set aside 25% of the token supply for grants, loans and investments to software developers, hardware manufacturers, and systems integrators. We are building relationships with the Solana Superteam network to kickstart the ecosystem. We want to make sure that all winemakers can get on the platform.
