I agree, the timing could not be better for DePIN on Solana. This year will be huge for growth and collaborations!
Really interesting project!
I believe the use case is extremely important as nowadays we are more concerned about the environment and the air we breath. In my case, I would love to have a sensor and thus live data both in my house and in the office where i work, which are the two places where I spend the majority of my time.
Thanks to this kind of data I think I would take more informed decisions, for instance when comes to buy a home or deciding where to go on holiday.
Really eager to see Ambient next steps!!
Your scenario is a very typical. We have some users that have a Kaiterra Sensedge Mini in their home to monitor for the whole family, also an IN5 sensor at their office desk for their own checks, some hardcore enthusiasts even have an Atmotube Pro as mobile carry sensor to cover for their route to work and back.
I think every situation can be covered, while not every situation is necessary to cover, like in a car you should open the windows often to not accumulate CO2 while of course closing them if you are in an area with a lot exhaust smoke going around.
But monitoring home and workspace is crucial, not just for health but also concentration and efficiency.
Hi Team,
I do have a question about the plans for making indoor sensors data valuable from the commercial point of view. We all know that PW was concentrating mostly on outdoor sensors data because it looks like that could have more sales attraction, at least initially. I believe that data sales for indoor sensors data will be more tricky than outdoors sensors but it would be great to see what are the plans (if any yet!) for that… especially keeping in mind that most of the community owns indoor sensors.
Many thanks!
Mallor
Hi Mallor,
Thank you for your question! You’re right that PlanetWatch legacy network focused in the bigger picture more on outdoor sensors, which seemed to have more commercial appeal. To some extent that does in fact still apply with Ambient Network, simply for the fact that outdoor sensors are representative for a bigger area (roughly 450 meter radius) and shows metrics that is “shared” by more humans naturally. I mean if we think about air quality data from a country, we usually refer to outdoor stations and not residential homes. However, there are indeed plans from Ambient Network to make indoor sensor data commercially valuable, and profitable- as well.
Current Plans and Strategies:
Data Monetization: Ambient is aiming to monetize indoor sensor data by selling it to high-end hotels and other venues that value detailed air quality information. This demonstrates a growing market for indoor data, especially in sectors where air quality is crucial for customer satisfaction and health. Naturally that does not do a lot for residential home units at first glance, but it is a necessary step to elevate the whole networks indoor data value by showing its relevance with high tier corporate and enterprise situations.
API Development: The release of the API allows for the automatic, real-time retrieval of indoor sensor data. This can be integrated into third-party applications, making the data more accessible and valuable for various commercial uses. Some people overlook the fact, that this API is not free in use, it has a cost to it and the revenue from it’s usage will benefit the network but more specifically the targeted sensors. Again this will be probably initially used more on public buildings units or very “representative” indoor units and will need time to trickle down to residential units on statistical data pulls.
Partnerships and Discounts: Ambient is negotiating with sensor manufacturers like Kaiterra to provide cartridges at discounted prices. This aims to increase the adoption of indoor sensors, thereby expanding the data network and its commercial potential. Same goes for some wild plans to increase IN5 deployment soon, all the while evaluating a new high tier indoor sensor. This might sound rather “business as usual” coming from me, almost unrelated as an information… But what I am trying to get at here, is that everything has an intent and an agenda. Ambient does this of course not for fun, but because there are clear indicators for a future business case. Ambient is far more business focused and would not invest so massively into indoor AQ, if there was not a real tangible business case.
Scientific Collaboration: Indoor sensor data has been used in scientific research, which can enhance its credibility and value. For example, data from indoor sensors in hotels has been leveraged in academic papers. Now the next step is to take this up a notch. Ambient is working with more prominent air quality institutions than PW had at the time. It will take time to provide tangible effects, but there are some things being cooked in the science sector.
What does this all mean for private user indoor residential data value?
Simply put, it is not yet there, but everything is done to get it there. Ambient uses the more prominent usecases for indoor AQ, hotels, public buildings, schools, hospitals, science, universities, etc. to build repoir for it. While outdoor AQ will always be the “easier” product to market from a commercial business point of view, the indoor AQ has two factors over it. Indoor is more applicable directly to human health by proximity, and generally more precise because of the enclosed area it is monitored in. It is hard to predict which one will be the first real business case for private home residential monitoring, but my assumption is that it will be either the health insurance sector tapping into statistical data from residential homes, science related to get statistical data for a study, health and wellness companies (think like the fitbit smartwatch) to offer personalized health advice or products based on air quality data, environmental researchers for studies on indoor pollution effects.
There are many more weird scenarios I can think of, just that they are less likely, like for example in the far future also Government and Regulatory Bodies to enforce air quality standards and regulations, or Smart Home Device Manufacturers to enhance their products with air quality monitoring features and use existing data metrics as case study.
I hope sometime we can get a collaboration case of an air purifier company working together with Ambient to make “in the field” metric showcase of their products efficiency… but I digress.
These 4 steps I started with indicate a clear strategy to enhance the commercial value of indoor sensor data, but also the worlds awareness towards the topic of this indoor data is rising, making it a promising area for future growth.
Ambient Network will represent on Solana Breakpoint !
Do not miss the chance and connect with the CEO Luca Franchi in advance via his Linkdin = Luca Franchi - Ambient Network | LinkedIn and meet him in person!
Wow! What a comprehensive response, it’s very much appreciated @Merlin-M-Ostermann as always!
what about South America??? We are here too !!!
I saw a great post by @FourPillarsFP on Twitter. Exploring Solana’s Ecosystem boom! Which is part of the Solana Mega Report V2 coming soon!
There are so many great projects that are part of Solana, but only 1 project in the environmental Category! I suppose that means Ambient is already the #1 Environmental DePIN project on Solana!
It feels good to present at the start of a new DePIN project!
South America is as important as anyone else !!!
In fact let us not even open that can of worms how important AQ monitoring is in the one and only continent with the OG rainforest!
The thing is just, PW really focused sales firstly and mostly to EU, then it opened up to USA and CAN … but people from South America were never really targeted as customers (and sadly so!).
While @AmbientNetwork will first continue where PW left, it will instantly elevate to other areas and countries, you can bet on that!
For all there is, we can be really thankful that there are some dedicated people like you that even got the sensors running in South America, Africa, India and other countries where they were not easy to get!
Thank you for being one of the most loyal core network participants!
