Proposal: Jupiter Online Shop

[UPDATE]

:+1: Thank you to @Morten for the info. Apparently the Jupiter team has a shop in the talks, or further along.

:ballot_box_with_check: Feel free to leave further feedback. It may come in handy for whatever the Jupiter team has planned. Maybe they will adopt ideas mentioned here. I just hope I get my hat.

 Just a reminder that we are all equals here, and all ideas should be met with respectful and thoughtful dialog. Condescension is unwelcomed and simply doesnā€™t follow our PPP environment.

 Thank you everyone for your kind feedback!

Objective

This is my formal proposal for the creation of the Jupiter online shop, dedicated to the Jupiter ecosystem. The online shop would be stocked with merch/swag designed and voted on by the community. The shop would aim to enhance community engagement, promote the Jupiter brand, and generate revenue for more ecosystem development.

My Role

  • Design and develop the shop
  • Build out each product to specs
  • Regular shop maintenance and product updates
  • Aggregate feedback, designs, and votes
  • Post design contests regularly
  • Answer questions regarding the shop, contests, and voting
  • Provide merch for IRL meetups
  • Wear my Catdet hat every day

Community Role

  • Submit designs for merchandise
  • Vote on designs for merchandise
  • Win $JUP
  • Offer suggestions on improvements
  • REPRESENT by wearing and using our merch

E-Commerce Platform

I propose using a platform called Shopify because of its long time development and support, as well as the feature rich design. Shopify will allow us to customize our shop to represent the Jupiter brand. Another benefit of using Shopify is the ability to use Solana Pay. In these ways we can keep our shop fully aligned with the Jupiter brand and vision.

Design Submissions & Voting

  • Design submissions can be submitted through a Google Form or a dedicated Discord channel
  • Voting can be facilitated here through Jupresear.ch or through a dedicated Discord channel

Revenue

All revenue from shop sales will go to the DAO.

Action Plan [UPDATED]

  1. Development Phase (4-6 weeks):

    • Set up the e-commerce platform.
    • Apply approved design and layout
    • Implement design submission and voting features
    • Initial product launch.
  2. Launch and Promotion (2-4 weeks):

    • Announce the shop launch
    • Run initial design contests and promotions (monthly contests to follow)
  3. Maintenance and Growth (ongoing):

    • Regular updates and new product additions
    • Continuous community engagement through design contests, voting, and feedback

Budget [UPDATED]

  • Development Costs: $2800 USDC, or $JUP equivalent at the time of payment
  • Maintenance & Management Costs: $14400 USDC for the first year, or $JUP equivalent at the time of payment (to be reviewed at the end of the year)
  • Design Winners Pool: 24000 $JUP for the first year (2000 per month)

With your creativity and support we can make the Jupiter online shop the catā€™s pajamas! Weā€™ll have the coolest merch in the Jupiverse. Thanks for considering my proposal!

[UPDATE]: Long-term marketing and promotional efforts were not included and can be discussed as well.

Look I admire your determintation in the proposal, but i cant see this happening.

Ive been in crypto and nfts for over 3 years now, and i am still yet to see anyone in public wearing web3 merch.

Personally, i feel the merch is a little cringe for the average joe ot wear. i understNd if the team wear a JUP badge or logo as apart of their uniform, but fro swag? umm yeah no from me.

Secondly, i cant see many people buying it. The cost of running the shop would not generate enough GP for it to be worth while. Great idea, but persoanlly a big no from me. I wouldnt buy anything.

Iā€™m not sure I understand your question. Can you explain what your goal is?

Should I send my entries for clothing ideas to you personally right now?

I agree with you partially. I know places where such merch works and people who wear them. Not loud and proud on their daily grind like an established brand, but my neighbours you see them with such shirts. I mean to be fair, I play a big part of influence in that, but there is a culture for these things.

My issue is a completely different one with the proposal. The costs asked are super high and seem unreasonable. I mean sure a webshop made by a designer has its costs, especially when for some reason he starts from Figma do go the full ebkit route. And asks a fulltime salary in the process. I worked for many companies and still am in the field with many now. Like an internal designer that does that kind of work at this rate, basically pulls 20x in the web3 business, because doin the e-commerce visuals is just one set he does while he has to also cover social media, website demands and event related things.

I know designers that work for less, but also those that earn more. Just in this case it seems a bit unreasonable to make such a dramatic investment.

Lets be real for a moment, ist this overengineered approach needed? Probably not. I do not see how that investment would recover. Far to high costs for too little revenue.

How to do it better?

Look go like every Youtuber or influencer would. Use print on demand and other 3rd party services llike teaspring and whatnot.
No cost, no inventory, no pre-investment but a vast array of products you can slap some design on.

Use their generic shop template and make one nice header for it. Done.

If Jupiter has a merch shop it does not need to be fancy, it should just be working and safe made from something official and not from unknown up and comings.

Having this Web3 style payable in JUP just makes everything about it risky and worse.

Use 3rd party print on demand merchstore, use their shop and payment API for Paypal and Visa and just call it a day- Revenue incoming is converted into Jup in a pool and put out as bounty for designercontest to have people compete for what is put next on shirts.

That is it.

Not any upfront investment, because lets be real:

It will probably pull like 10-30$ revenue on max 300$ turnover a month because like @lochie2001 said, the common Web3 degen would rather pile 30$ into some more token than get a cringe shirt he only can wear while watching youtube or chilling in bed.

Let me know where to send designs, this sounds awesome and right up my alley.

Interesting idea but with the costs you stated it would be a ā€˜noā€™ from me. There is simply not enough purchasing volume to justify it, at least for the first three years. If you could run it at lower cost, the ā€˜noā€™ might turn in to a ā€˜yesā€™.

Not yet my friend. Letā€™s get some useful feedback and then go from there.

The idea of an online shop is not bad for me. An online store that community members can purchase merch with JUP tokens is a brilliant idea. You can even give NFTs to wallets that get merch from the store. Imo, the costs should be modest, what you get from the whole thing should not be seen as you trying to milk the DAO

Thank you for your opinions.

Figma: I joined some CWG meetings and it seems this is how they do things. It is how approval for a design is received. This is where about half the cost comes from. I actually would rather skip the design process and just build but I am trying to stick to what seems is the process. Cost can be adjusted if this is not needed. And timeframe can be decreased also.

Cost/Fulltime salary: Where I live what I am asking for is fairly low. I donā€™t work for free. I am a seasoned professional. I understand there are some degens here living with mom and dad and have all the time in the world to work for free. But that is not me. I currently have many bills to pay and live out of my vehicle (some call it homeless) because I did too many favors. My time and skills are valuable. Cost will always be debatable, especially when the services I provide are being more and more devalued by folks who want to cut corners and sacrifice quality and sustainability.

ā€œLetā€™s be real for a momentā€: I donā€™t mean to be rude, but I live solidly in reality at all times.

Revenue: I am not proposing to make only t-shirts with logos on them. Yes, they will be included. But what I am proposing is building a real merch brand that extends beyond Jupiter and web3. I envision plenty of marketing and promotional material. I want to build a real sustainable merch shop with cool and witty merch designs (Catdets, PPP, COC, etc.). Also, stuff anyone can wear or use because it is relatable in some way. Use your imagination.

Crypto Payments: Just one option my friend. Traditional methods will also be included. This can also be another way to onboard more people into the Jupiter ecosystem, Solana, and web3 in general.

Shopify: Please DYOR. Shopify is one of the highest rated 3rd party services for shops available. But if the DAO would rather use TSpring or RedBubble or Printify or any other, I have extensive experience with all of them.

ā€œdoes not need to be fancyā€: I definitely disagree. This is Jupiter. We are VERY fancy cats, LOL. The brand is very important to maintain. Also, the public perception will be affected if we donā€™t produce something we are proud of and produce to the highest standards. This goes along with producing more revenue. If you let crap sit it will get crappier. If you take care of your garden it will produce beautiful fruits and veggies.

Looks quality bro! Looking forward to it!

Look I get what I said hurt you, but they way you argue knowing better exposes you for being more hurt than reasonable. I did not want to put you down by my job, but if you ask for it I made 15 merchstores for different companies, not as the designer but as the Marketing Manager or the specific Project Manager overlooking the entire process and working with a designer or those 3rd parties.

I am not a degen my friend, you are probably more one than me.

ā€œliving with mom and dadā€ā€¦ is like ā€œtell me your butthurt without telling me your butthurtā€

I do not need e-pen comparisons, you are invited to check out my LinkedIn in my profile here and consider how load you make this.

Look, you might believe you know it better, but you believing that is all. I respectfully agree to disagree.

You think with your uber skills in design you make a merch-shop and brand that does enough overhead, turnover and revenue to substantiate the costs you proclaim? You must be out of your mind, please run the numbers through a marketing professional.

Please this is not about you it is about logic and community metrics.

Even half the costs of what you propose could be not made in final revenue of sales by the amount of potential customers here.

And while I do not know how good of a designer you might be, I know designers that work even at higher cost. I worked with the brand designer of Oakley and that team there worked at probably 15x that rate. But even they could not pull half the revenue you proposed from this customer base, no offence.

My suggestion to use Teespring or something similar like Printify, Gelato or Spreadshirt is the fact that you have it on demand and do not need to pay such amount upfront while you get a revenue share.
Sale - Cost you think the Jupiter Community would pull in more than 50-100 bucks a month from merch? please explain me how.

And while we are at it, if you want to go keyboardwarrior, I am here with my name and my real LinkedInā€¦

I know this is not malicious stuff, but I would argue that someone would have cared to maybe whitelist and review his own domains.

And other than that I would like to see quantifications. It is all nice to say this would be good and needed and so important, but I would also argue that you either go low barrier cheap entry for a merch shop that will only generate low income (hence why Youtubers use print on demand services) and if you want to make an argument for triple A then you should also think about what it is worth. Or would you invest 10k into a merchstore that has a revenue projection of less than 1k a year?

Wow, Iā€™m not hurt at all. I feel bad for you. Please stop harassing me while you hide behind your computer screen. And learn how to speak respectfully and constructive. Thank you. I hope you have a better day ahead.

If you call that harassing, ok I will stop, did not meant harm. I just do not get why I am hiding behind a screen and you not? My Name is Merlin M. Ostermann from Germany, my Linkedin is: https://www.linkedin.com/in/merlin-m-o/

I do not hide, and I will take the point on not being respectful, but while being critical it was all meant constructive.

I can gladly map out in 10 minutes in a live call to a public audience how the revenue projection is expected with merch on Jupiter.

You are free to just say I am wrong already here, but then tell me how much pure revenue (after cost) you expect from a merch brand on Jupiter please.

Ok, Merlin M. Ostermann from Germany. Iā€™m Nate, and I highly doubt you would speak to me the same way in person. You would likely be kinder due to my stature. So thatā€™s why I say hiding. You have no repercussions for the way you speak so rudely. Youā€™re more rude than critical.

I never said a thing about projections. I donā€™t do projections. I propose to make a quality project that can then be used for enjoyment, experimentation, and hopeful growth. Iā€™m not promising specific revenue levels. Iā€™m promising quality and fun for our community and others. The money will eventually come back around, sooner or later, depending on how much we own it.

That being said, I really donā€™t have more time to waste in this kind of dialog. If you want to discuss revenue with respect then I may join the conversation. Otherwise, thanks for your time.

Ok so I am wrong with everything because you are intimidating in stature. While I harassed you before.

I guess that is a checkmate then huh?

Have a nice day, I stand by all I said.

Be kinder with your words. Everything in the proposal is debatable. Being rude and condescending is not. Letā€™s move on.

Please stop the harassment. I joined a community that I thought was not toxic and I am realizing I was wrong. Just please take your comments somewhere else. I donā€™t like listening to lies over and over. This is exhausting. I hope you have a better day soon. Take care.

Extremely relaxed over here. Clowns donā€™t bother me. Maybe we can get constructive now.
